On 22nd January 1970 a Sabre 5, serial number 23102, touched down at Trenton after a flight from Montreal-Cartierville to mark the finale of what was considered to be the "last official Sabre flight in Canada". It also meant the end of a brilliant career in its homeland of one of the finest—if not the best—day fighter aircraft of die post-war period, at least as far as its country of origin and the Royal Canadian Air Force was concerned. Having provided the major aircraft equipment of the RCAF for over twelve years as well as being utilized by several other air forces, it had played a dominant part on the stage of European air defence since 1951; and even today it is still flying in small numbers, and is expected to do so for some time to come before leaving the sky for ever. Its official retirement from RCAF service was marked by a ceremony held on 29th November 1968 at the Canadian air base of Chatham, New Brunswick. This concerned twenty-one Sabres Mk. 5, the last to remain on the RCAF inventory.

On 25 June 1936 the first Bristol Type 142M Blenheim medium bomber made its maiden flight and, in the process, also marked the appearance of the first of a series of twin-engined bomber and fighter designs to be produced by the Bristol firm during a period which lasted beyond the end of World War 2 - following the Blenheim came the Beaufort, Beaufighter, Buckingham and Brigand. The Blenheim gave great service during the early years of the conflict, the Beaufighter proved a major success and the only failure was the Buckingham medium bomber. The Beaufort also gave sterling service but often seems to get overlooked by historians.

Spitfire - The Canadians and Spitfire II - The Canadians both take an identical approach to the subject of Spitfires flown by Canadian pilots. Both books are presented in hard cover, 12" x 9" format with high-quality glossy pages.
The author, Robert Bracken, exclusively uses the first-hand stories of the pilots to establish a sweeping and vivid impression of Spitfire operations wherever Canadians were stationed. 58 individual stories are related in the first book, while 37 are told in Spitfire II. The stories in both books are mutually exclusive - the episodes in each cover from the Battle of Britain to the cessation of hostilities. The text has been skilfully edited to retain the first-hand impressions while remaining entertaining and readable. A thread of wry humour runs through some of these articles, in addition to a fair share of honest self-reflection.
Modellers will appreciate the large number of high quality, beautifully reproduced wartime photos in each book. Most of these are at least a half-page in size, with many full-page photographs displaying terrific detail. The photographs are supported by Ron Lowry's attractive colour profiles - 39 in the first book and 9 in the second. These will provide ample inspiration for modelling subjects ranging from the Mk. I right through to the Mk. 24.
The first book supplies five pages of detailed plans by A.R. Clint. These plans cover the Spitfire Vb, IXc, XIVe and XVIe; plus a chronology of comparative side profiles from the Mk. IIa to the XIVe
Spitfire II also includes nine rare wartime colour photographs of aircraft and personnel. The pictures of the all-blue PR.XI will be especially interesting to many enthusiasts.

During the 1950s, the Soviet Union produced and used around 9,000 MiG-17s. First flown in January 1950, it is an extensively upgraded MiG-15 with a redesigned scimitar wing and lengthened fuselage, and known to NATO as "Fresco." The type was built under various designations including the Polish Lim-5P and Lim-6bis and the Czech S-105, and served not only with the Soviet armed forces but with the military in other Warsaw Pact nations, and further afield including Afghanistan, Cuba, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Morocco, North Korea, North Vietnam, and Syria. The Chinese built the MiG-17 as the Shenyang F-4.
The type saw combat in the Middle East against Israel, in North Vietnam, and in Nigeria during the Biafran War. As the later MiG-19 was introduced, the MiG-17 was relegated mostly to the ground-attack role, replacing the MiG-15.
